I have talked about this many times before: that many families and students sometimes only focus on a few college programs. There are many reasons for this. One being that you may only know of a certain college program or know about programs that you’ve seen on T.V. and it’s only natural to just want to be contacted by these programs.
Unless you’re a major-major college recruit that everyone knows, you’re going to have to pull your attention towards 100 college programs.
Yes, that’s right; 100 college programs!
Most states may not have 100 college programs and that’s ok because you should also be looking outside of your home state.
Why 100 college programs? The answer is exposure. The more college programs that know about you, the better it will be. I’ll say it again this way; if there are just a handful of college programs that are recruiting you then they can, and will, make you wait and give you the offer they want you to have. Whereas you would get a better offer if there were, say 20 or 30 college programs competing for you!
Develop a list of 100 college programs. Start to gather information on each program.
If you’re in a situation where you’re getting a scholarship then, no big deal. The scholarship will be the same with all Division 1 college programs.
Your being recruited by college programs is new to most families of high school student athletes. Some families make the mistake of taking the first offer put in front of them and college coaches are trying to get the best bank for their recruiting budgets.
Now you’re saying to yourself, we may not need 100 college programs or that’s too many to work with or even contact. I will say this--every college program is different with many different needs in players or scholarships or money that program can give to you. The smaller college programs don’t offer scholarships so it’s going to cost you out of your own pocket.
But if you have a large number of college programs that you’re working on then you could put yourself in a better position.
One hundred college programs is a big list but if you do this the right way, you will get what you want!
